Riding in rain and cold: what gear should you bring?
Plan motorcycle layers for rain and cold with an adjustable temperature guide. Check gloves, waterproofs and wind chill, plus the limits of gear.
Build your cold and wet checklist
Your inputs. Clear limits. A better riding plan.
Your next great ride starts with the right forecast.
Weather guidance, not a guarantee of safe riding. Check official warnings, road conditions and the full outward and return journey.

Match equipment roles to the journey
Protective motorcycle equipment remains essential at every temperature. Insulation retains warmth; a windproof barrier reduces airflow through layers; waterproof gloves, boots and an outer layer help manage wet exposure. MSF explains equipment roles and fit. No item of gear removes crosswind or proves adequate road grip.
The suggested bins are ≤0, above 0–5, 5–10, 10–15, 15–20 and above 20°C. These are editable comfort prompts, not physiological limits or certified safe temperatures. Duration, speed, wetness and individual comfort can change the plan. Use the separate wind-chill calculator for a labelled riding-airflow estimate.
Reassess cold, wet surfaces and heat
A low air-temperature reading cannot establish whether a specific road has ice. Shaded surfaces, bridges and wet patches can differ from the forecast grid. Autumn leaves, rain and reduced visibility also deserve a separate road check. Plan reassessment breaks on longer journeys and stop if cooling, fatigue or reduced dexterity affects control.
In warm weather keep appropriate protective clothing, consider ventilation and take breaks. A layering suggestion never raises the weather score. The full outward and return forecast and official warnings remain the starting point.
