Is it too windy to cycle today?
GoNoGo caps cycling at MAYBE from 40 km/h sustained wind or 50 km/h gusts, and NO-GO from 55 km/h sustained wind or 70 km/h gusts. These are the app’s planning rules, not universal safe cycling limits. Choose a location in the live cycling planner and check every hour through your return before interpreting today’s weather.
Mean wind, gusts and the cycling score
| Input from the deployed cycling scorer | Effect |
|---|---|
| Gusts ≥ 35 km/h | −8 points |
| Mean ≥ 32 km/h or gusts ≥ 45 km/h | −20 points |
| Mean ≥ 45 km/h or gusts ≥ 60 km/h | −35 points |
| Mean ≥ 40 km/h or gusts ≥ 50 km/h | At most 64/100: MAYBE |
| Mean ≥ 55 km/h or gusts ≥ 70 km/h | At most 40/100: NO-GO |
Use only the applicable wind deduction, then apply the strictest cap. Rain and temperature penalties are separate. The GoNoGo methodology and deployed cycling scorer are the source of these rules, checked on 24 October 2026.
Try a wind-only example
Change mean wind and gusts below. All other inputs stay at this illustrative reference hour: 18°C air and feels-like, no rain, 0% rain probability, visibility 10 km, clear weather, cloud 10%, humidity 60% and UV 0. These are examples, not a forecast. The tool runs the existing cycling scorer.
| Mean wind km/h | Gust km/h | Effective score | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 35 | 92 | GO |
| 32 | 45 | 80 | GO |
| 40 | 45 | 64 | MAYBE |
| 55 | 60 | 40 | NO-GO |
| 10 | 70 | 40 | NO-GO |
A windy outward ride and a harder return
Wind direction names where the wind comes from. The cycling planner can compare a travel bearing with the forecast direction, then reverse that bearing for the return. A tailwind at departure is therefore not a reason to skip the later headwind check. Turning roads, bridges and gaps in shelter can change exposure.
The planner is a point forecast with a bearing scenario. It does not calculate an hour-by-hour wind score along a mapped cycling route, and it does not know shelter at every turn. Inspect exposed sections separately and use official warnings and actual observations alongside the forecast.
Read the full riding interval
In the cycling planner, choose location, departure and return. The interval inherits its worst hourly result; the best two-hour window is listed separately. A good departure hour cannot erase a poor return. Missing required inputs return Insufficient data rather than a favourable assumed value.
For a combined wet and windy ride, the cycling rain guide explains the independent rain penalty. In the reference hour, 45 km/h gusts and 32 km/h mean wind give 80/100; adding 0.3 mm/h rain lowers this to 45/100, MAYBE. The motorcycle wind guide uses different gust rules and should not be applied to a bicycle.
Frequently asked questions
Is 40 km/h wind too strong to cycle?
In the GoNoGo cycling scorer, sustained wind from 40 km/h caps the result at MAYBE. It is an application setting, not a universal handling limit. Gusts, rain, route exposure and your circumstances still matter.
Does the tool score every point of a cycling route hour by hour?
The cycling planner evaluates a selected forecast point through your riding interval and can compare outward and return headwind scenarios from a travel bearing. It does not infer a mapped route or calculate shelter and wind at every turn.
Can a tailwind on the outward leg hide a hard return?
Yes. A bearing reversal turns the same along-route wind into the opposite component. Check the forecast at the expected return time as well; wind speed and direction can change during the ride.
