Can you fly a drone in cold weather?
Cold and the drone model — limits of this forecast.
Choose your location to load today’s verdict and its reason. No current verdict is available until the forecast loads.
Start with the aircraft's operating range
A cold-weather decision starts with the exact aircraft and battery manuals. The live verdict combines forecast conditions; it does not know the model you own, its battery condition or its operating temperature range. A favourable score cannot override a manufacturer restriction. Select the take-off point and read the temperature, gust and precipitation inputs together.
The GoNoGo drone scorer uses air temperature rather than feels-like temperature for cold penalties. Below 0°C it subtracts 25 points. At −5°C or lower it subtracts 60 points. A dry, clear reference hour at −5°C therefore scores 40/100, NO-GO. These settings describe the software; they are not a manufacturer rating.
Cold combines with other conditions
A reference hour at −1°C loses 25 cold points. With 29 km/h gusts, the additional wind penalty brings it to 47/100, MAYBE. At 38 km/h gusts the wind penalty and cap can lower the result further. Inspect every reason instead of interpreting the temperature band as a complete flight decision.
Other inputs can force NO-GO independently: precipitation of at least 0.1 mm/h, a rain probability of 50%, the scorer's specified rain or snow codes, or visibility below 1 km. A dry-looking image or an apparently tolerable temperature does not cancel these inputs. The forecast may also miss a local shower or conditions above the ground-level forecast point.
Battery preparation and the return flight
Use the manufacturer's procedure for charging, storage, preparation and temperature checks. Do not improvise battery heating or treat a warm battery as permission to fly below the aircraft's operating range. Examine the battery and aircraft as required by their instructions. The weather tool cannot verify charge, damage, battery temperature or remaining flight time.
Plan the return before take-off. A forecast at the launch site cannot tell whether there is enough reserve to return against the wind. Winds aloft, terrain and obstacles may differ from the point forecast. Leave the flight decision to the applicable aircraft guidance and your assessment of actual conditions, not the displayed suitability number alone.
Check the place and the whole flight window
The forecast does not check airspace restrictions, take-off permission, separation from people or visual line of sight. Consult the relevant aviation authority and landowner information for the location. Those checks remain necessary in mild weather as well as cold weather. Never infer legal permission from a GO label.
Compare the expected start and landing hours, including time spent preparing on site. Check local weather warnings separately: GoNoGo does not ingest them. If visibility, precipitation or wind is worsening, do not assume that a short flight avoids the change. The seven-day view is a planning comparison, while the hourly inputs are more relevant near departure.
Frequently asked questions
What temperature is too cold for a drone?
Use the operating range for your exact aircraft and battery. GoNoGo subtracts 25 points below 0°C and 60 at −5°C or lower, using air temperature. Those are fixed app settings. They cannot establish the limit of a particular aircraft, battery or flight, even when the displayed verdict is GO.
Can I fly if the battery has been warmed?
Battery preparation must follow the exact manufacturer's instructions. Warming does not override the aircraft's operating range, resolve battery damage or guarantee enough reserve for the return. The forecast does not measure battery temperature or condition. Check the aircraft, battery guidance, actual weather and complete flight plan before deciding whether to take off.
Why can a dry cold day still show NO-GO?
Temperature is only one input. Strong gusts, low visibility, precipitation probability or a weather code can reduce the score or impose a cap. Read the reason beside the verdict and inspect the hourly values. A dry appearance at the launch point cannot establish suitable conditions aloft or throughout the return flight.
