Wind and fishing: casting, exposure and the route home

Explore fishing gust deductions and caps while separating shore casting from boating and actual water conditions.

The fishing scorer begins a gust deduction at 30 km/h, caps at MAYBE from 48 and at NO-GO from 62. Those are general application rules, not a safe boat limit or a casting guarantee. Shore exposure, footing, wind direction and water conditions can require changing the session well before a numerical cap.

Shore fishing and a boat are different plans

A gust can make casting difficult from an exposed bank, but a boat also needs a passage and return assessment. The app does not know the vessel, load, crew, launch site or conditions at the landing. Do not apply the score as a maximum wind rating for a small craft.

The same town forecast can describe a sheltered bank and an exposed headland poorly. Check an appropriate local or marine forecast and observe the actual site. Wind direction and access can matter even when the gust number is unchanged.

Comfort does not establish a suitable position

The scorer cannot inspect a slippery platform, surf, falling branches or a dangerous route down to the water. Being able to tolerate the breeze is different from maintaining a suitable fishing position and getting home. A high score does not resolve those questions.

Use the explorer to see wind deductions independently, then combine them with rain or poor visibility. These are synthetic examples of the unchanged model. They do not predict casting distance, fish location or the probability of a bite.

These complete hypothetical hours run through the same scoring functions used by the live tool. They are not observations or forecasts. The displayed effective score includes any cap.

Planning bands and the limits of the number

The existing model starts at 100, subtracts its condition penalties and applies critical caps. GO is 70–100, MAYBE 45–69 and NO-GO 0–44. A MAYBE cap limits the effective score to 64, and a NO-GO cap to 40. These are application suitability bands, not certified safe operating limits.

Rain branches are alternatives: matching probability, intensity and weather-code triggers do not mean adding the same rain penalty repeatedly. Separate factors can combine. A cap prevents benign temperature or dry weather from cancelling a critical flagged condition. Use the reasons beside the result to understand what changed.

The model requires complete numeric weather inputs. Missing visibility, rain probability or another required value returns Insufficient data; it is never filled with an invented favourable value. Local warnings, closures, equipment instructions and actual observations can change your decision even when the model returns GO.

Read the full fishing methodology and thresholds. The model and these examples were cross-checked on 18 October 2026. No physical field-test or safety certification is claimed.

Equipment and an alternative plan

Choose a position with reliable footing and an easy retreat, and check water conditions separately. For boating, use vessel-specific guidance and a suitable marine plan. If gusts make access, casting or return uncertain, choose a sheltered alternative or postpone instead of relying on better equipment.

Questions about Wind and fishing: casting, exposure and the route home

Are the app’s gust caps boat limits?

No. The model has no vessel specification.

Does wind direction change this score?

The fishing scorer does not model the orientation of your bank or route.

Does a breezy GO predict better catches?

No. Catch success is outside the model.

Sources and limits

The numeric application bands come from the existing GoNoGo scorer and methodology. External guidance is linked for its stated context; it is not presented as endorsement of this model.

Live forecast data is supplied by Open-Meteo. An illustrative model output is different from a live forecast, and a forecast is different from a local observation.
