Kitesurf wind range: gusts, equipment and honest model bands

Inspect the existing kitesurf wind rules in km/h, with clear distinctions between gusts, average wind and equipment limits.

GoNoGo’s kitesurf model uses gusts when available: below 12 km/h it caps at NO-GO, below 15 at MAYBE, and it applies stronger-wind caps above 44 and 52. These broad app bands are not a usable wind range for every kite, board, rider or beach. Check the actual equipment chart, wind direction and local instruction.

Do not read the app band as a kite specification

The score has no kite model, rider weight, board or skill input. A broad band in its code therefore cannot identify the correct equipment or establish that a beginner can launch. The page explains the existing model without pretending it is a tailored sizing system.

Mean wind and gusts have different roles. Equipment selection needs the manufacturer’s wind-range information, while gusts can reveal a very different peak from the steady breeze. The current score uses the gust value when it exists; it does not silently become a mean-wind calculator.

A suitable number can still describe an unsuitable beach

Wind direction, launch space, obstacles, currents, waves and rescue arrangements are outside this simple score. An offshore flow can leave the numerical model high while making the actual plan unsuitable. Check local conditions and qualified guidance before interpreting a colour as a decision.

The explorer makes the model’s low-wind and stronger-wind branches visible. It is useful for understanding why a score changes, not for deciding that a particular kite can be flown just below a cap. Storms impose an independent NO-GO.

These complete hypothetical hours run through the same scoring functions used by the live tool. They are not observations or forecasts. The displayed effective score includes any cap.

Planning bands and the limits of the number

The existing model starts at 100, subtracts its condition penalties and applies critical caps. GO is 70–100, MAYBE 45–69 and NO-GO 0–44. A MAYBE cap limits the effective score to 64, and a NO-GO cap to 40. These are application suitability bands, not certified safe operating limits.

Rain branches are alternatives: matching probability, intensity and weather-code triggers do not mean adding the same rain penalty repeatedly. Separate factors can combine. A cap prevents benign temperature or dry weather from cancelling a critical flagged condition. Use the reasons beside the result to understand what changed.

The model requires complete numeric weather inputs. Missing visibility, rain probability or another required value returns Insufficient data; it is never filled with an invented favourable value. Local warnings, closures, equipment instructions and actual observations can change your decision even when the model returns GO.

Read the full kitesurf methodology and thresholds. The model and these examples were cross-checked on 18 October 2026. No physical field-test or safety certification is claimed.

Equipment and an alternative plan

Use your kite’s own chart and appropriate local instruction, inspect the launch and landing area and verify wind direction. Choose a different beach, lesson arrangement or day when those factors do not suit the plan. The score is neither a kite manual nor launch permission.

Questions about Kitesurf wind range: gusts, equipment and honest model bands

Are the bands in knots?

No. The scorer’s wind and gust inputs here are km/h. The sizing calculator labels knots separately.

Does a GO mean my kite fits?

No. Equipment and rider weight are not in this scorer.

Does the model check offshore wind?

No. Wind direction relative to the beach needs a separate check.

Sources and limits

The numeric application bands come from the existing GoNoGo scorer and methodology. External guidance is linked for its stated context; it is not presented as endorsement of this model.

Live forecast data is supplied by Open-Meteo. An illustrative model output is different from a live forecast, and a forecast is different from a local observation.
